Churches, stores flavor a special night
Dec. 6, 2009

It was some things old - the soup supper and the cookie walk - and something new, the Nativity Holy Walk.

Together, they created a different flavor for the evening portion of Montezuma's Hometown Holiday on Saturday, Dec. 5.

Organizers called the event a success.

The Nativity Holy Walk depicted Biblical scenes from the first Christmas, using live actors. Groups of up to 25 persons gathered for an escorted and narrated walk around Montezuma's courthouse square.

Starting and ending point was Vannoy Chevrolet. Tour guides, portraying Isaiah, led the walk, which first went west across the courthouse lawn, where visitors passed shepherds tending their flock.

The rest of the scenes were indoors and included a census tent, King Herod visiting with the wise men, an inn with no room, an angel choir and finally, the Nativity scene as the walk proceeded around the square.

There were refreshments at Vannoy Chevrolet, and in various stores that remained open until 7 p.m.

The soup supper at First Presbyterian Church is a fund raiser for the church youth. It had steady crowds.

The cookie walk at United Methodist Church sold out an inventory of more than 4,000 of the baked treats.

The Montezuma Ministerial Association organized the Nativity Holy Walk and the Montezuma Community Boosters coordinated the rest of the day's activities.

The Boosters gave away a ham or a turkey every 15 minutes at Vannoy Chevrolet from 4 to 7 p.m. In a departure from previous years, winners did not have to be present.

Organizers said the departure of a new tour group every 20 minutes from Vannoy may have contributed to the steadiness of the crowds seen at the various venues and in the stores.
