Serving a growing senior population
Montezuma has a growing population of elderly residents. And, there are many programs in place for them. Here are some details about them:
Trips to Grinnell
Montezuma residents needing a ride to Grinnell and back can make that trip twice a month at no cost, thanks to a program called Community Care Transportation.
Volunteers will provide the round-trip van ride, in a vehicle provided by Community Hope Church and gas money donated for the first six months of service by the Montezuma Lions Club.
Pickup point is the Methodist Church. To reserve a seat, call 623-4673 or 623-5420.
The van used is a 15-passenger vehicle. It’s not handicapped-accessible, but there is no cost to participants.
Zuma 50-Plus Club
 |
The club meets monthly in the Presbyterian Family Center. There is a noon meal, prizes and entertainment. There is no charge. Please call the church at 623-3275 if you wish to attend so they know how many to prepare for. |
Community Fellowship
This organization meets monthly in the Faith Christian Center, 830 South Third Street. Rides to and from are provided! By calling church secretaries Darla at 623-3275 or Rita at 623-5410.
New fitness center coming?
The proposed Lew and Delores Lundy Health and Wellness Center at Montezuma High School would be a 60-by-90 foot building, with the most important goal being to improve the health and wellness of students and community residents.
It would feature a larger and safer free weight room, would be open more hours, would have restrooms and showers, a physical therapy room and walking track and more.
It would allow local residents needing exercise after surgery a chance to do this at home instead of traveling.
There is at present a smaller version of the fitness center currently in operation adjacent to the high school.
A committee is working to raise $200 thousand locally Then, the committee will seek a matching grant from the Community Attraction and Tourism program run by Vision Iowa. Gifts or pledges to the fund can be made through the Montezuma Community Foundation, P.O. Box 321, Montezuma, 50171.
“Montecard” is available
Senior citizens – those 65 and over – get in free to 44 Montezuma High School athletic events if they have a Montecard. They can be picked up from Mary Jo at the superintendents’ office at the school.

Montezuma’s local meals program is delivered by volunteers and coordinated by the Montezuma Food Pantry. Upwards of a dozen people are served daily. The food is prepared at Montezuma Nursing and Rehab Center. For more information and menus, call 623-5410.
